Robbie has been a full service dog for several years now, having completed all of his foundation, public access, and socialization training, as well as a few tasks. But he isn't a computer. I can't program in the settings I want, and expect all that training to sit around in pristine condition, waiting to be used. He is a living, breathing, strong-minded and intelligent dog who needs my help to remain in peak performance physically and mentally.
Working with a service dog is never done. As a candidate he learned foundation training, as an in-training dog he developed the skills that taught him how to be a service dog, and now as a working service dog he needs time to practice all of the skills and lessons that help to keep him a functional service dog. That type of training is what I call 'maintenance training'. A good amount of the old, a bit of new, a dash of games & agility, and a daily dose of exercise.
