More and more, service dogs are being discussed in the media as people become more aware of their existence and usefulness for people with disabilities. Many people are confused about the differences between therapy dogs, emotional support animals, and service dogs and try to pass off their ESA as a service dog out of ignorance, but a lot of people seem to think it is fun to take their pet dog, dress it up in a cool vest, and claim that it is a service dog because to them, all they see is a magic celebrity pass to go anywhere with their dog. In this post, I'll discuss fake service dogs, how they hurt real teams, and what it is really like to take your dog everywhere with you.
