The vast majority of dog owners believe that A) Discipline and punishment are the same thing and B) That Punishment = Abuse. In this post, I want to rectify both beliefs by explaining what discipline and punishment mean in dog training, as well as talk a bit about reinforcement terms, and finally laying out how discipline & punishment impact common behavioral problems in dogs.
People who don’t know or understand dog training theory, believe that punishment, discipline, and abuse are all synonyms. The way the words sound, I get why it confuses people, but this belief is incorrect. Abuse is a separate problem altogether, and is not at all the same thing as discipline or punishment. When we, as dog owners, implement discipline & punishment correctly in our dogs’ lives, it creates well-behaved dogs, who consistently listen to their handlers and are kept safe by the rules and boundaries laid out for them. Think of it this way: Discipline is how you structure and balance your dog’s life, and shape certain behaviors. Punishment is a tool in your arsenal for successful training.
