A polished service dog will have more commands than the average pet. How many commands depends on you, your dog, and what you need. Right now, Robbie has learned close to 40 commands and continues to pick up new ones in order to keep training challenging.
Basic commands such as sit, down, stand, heel, etc can get boring some days. They're repetitive. Apart from new locations, it's hard to spice those up. Incorporating them into games is a great way to change this. Play fetch with your service (great practice for retrieving necessary items for you) and have them wait in a down/stay before they get to go find & bring back the chosen object. The waiting & anticipation & final release builds up extra energy and playfulness. Use your come command once they pick up the toy and see them barrel back to you. Taking mundane commands and making them fun is a great way to let your dog play & be a dog, while still training. Just be sure you don't let them get away with disrespecting you or ignoring your commands.
